Applying Ethical AI Frameworks in practice: Evaluating conversational AI chatbot solutions

Several approaches work after the systems was designed and may not directly affect the creation phase. For example, audits are structured and independent examinations of a system after its completion. Similarly, declarations may be used to provide users or regulatory bodies with information about a system.

The following Table 8 lists all references with respect to the ethical issues that they aim to address. Similar to above, some papers are very general and a few address more than one issue. Also note that the data refers to the claims of the authors rather than an evaluation whether a proposed approach achieves its claims. A large proportion (26%) of the approaches are classified as algorithmic methods, followed by 18% of approaches that focus on conceptual approaches and frameworks, and 12% software approaches. This means that code (algorithms and software) accounts for 39% of the approaches.

Replacement of humans

In this section, we will explore the defined goals, differentiation of capabilities, transparency, and alternatives to AI that organizations need to keep in mind. As AI systems become more autonomous, it is important to establish mechanisms for tracing their actions and holding them accountable for their decision-making processes. This fosters transparency, ensures responsible AI usage, and helps prevent potential harm arising from the unchecked actions of AI technologies. Recognizing the significance of ethical AI use, governments and international organizations are actively working on regulations to enforce responsible AI practices. While the specifics may vary by jurisdiction, the focus remains on safeguarding individual rights, promoting fairness, and ensuring transparency. In addition to equal treatment, important aspect of fairness in conversational AI.

• In the last few years, several proposals attempted to address the various ethical issues, including checklists, standards, computer science or mathematical techniques (e.g., for privacy protection), etc.
• For the issues addressed by more than 10 papers, Table 9 gives the number of approaches greater than one addressing the issue (e.g. 7 papers that address privacy suggest approaching the issue with an algorithm or a computational method).
• Except for the above-mentioned case studies, there are very few publications of good or best practices in ethical design for AI.
• Companies should make their AI systems accessible to all users, including those with disabilities or specific needs.
• Examining the top Intents and messages can help identify common themes — why users are interacting and what they are asking about.

This is why some enterprises employ former screenwriters or comedians as conversation designers, as they better understand flows and timing. The ones that incorporate some form of personality tend to see an increase in engagement. While it is important to fail gracefully, it is also important to provide a path to escalation. The ability to escalate to a live-agent is one of the most common requests of end-users. In the example above, the chatbot welcomes the user, lets the user know what it can do, and even provides suggestions on what to ask.

3 Classification by approach

Responsible AI is crucial for the ethical and transparent development of conversational AI systems. By implementing responsible AI principles, organizations can promote fairness, transparency, and accountability in AI systems. It addresses important issues such as AI bias, discrimination, and privacy, ensuring that AI is developed and deployed in a way that benefits individuals and society as a whole.

There are a variety of ways to generate awareness for a chatbot or voice assistant. The important thing is to help get users back on the “happy path” as smoothly as possible. Building conversational interfaces can be challenging given the free-form nature of communication, and the unstructured data. It is difficult to know all the things a user may say, or how they may say them. It is quite a bit different from web or mobile where there are only so many links or buttons a user can click.
